centers of excellence
Welcome Back Veterans (WBV) is working in partnership with Major League Baseball Charities, the McCormick Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation to create a national network of University Hospitals that will serve our veterans and their families who are suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Currently, seven core centers are located at internationally recognized, university-based medical centers where treatment models are being developed and patients are being served:
Weill-Cornell Dept. of Psychiatry (New York, NY)
University of Michigan Depression Center
(Ann Arbor, MI)
Stanford University Dept. of Psychiatry
(Palo Alto, CA)
Mass General Hospital (Boston)
The goal is for WBV to form a private/public partnership, working with the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense to complement services currently being provided by these government agencies. These Centers:
offer evaluation, diagnosis, and care for veterans and their immediate family members
developing and implementing strategies to reduce stigma and overcome treatment barriers for active or retired service members and their families
providing treatment for veterans unable or unwilling to access care through a government facility
advancing knowledge with regard to the treatment of combat-related psychiatric problems, such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as major depression, and co-occurring suicidal thoughts or behaviors
Working together, these Centers are creating protocols to develop and provide optimal care as well as address gaps in knowledge relating to such care. These protocols can be implemented at medical centers throughout the country to foster a close public/private partnership that best addresses the mental health needs of those who have served our country.
The Centers serve two significant goals:
The provision of optimal care based on the current standards of care for patients and their families
The advancement of knowledge regarding optimal care for veterans exposed to combat theaters, and for their families, to improve preventive programs
A NATIONWIDE PARTNERSHIP: WBV SATELLITE CENTERS
In order to provide access to services across the United States, WBV Centers of Excellence will create partnerships with other University Hospitals, located in diverse geographic regions that will implement the "best practices" programs and protocols developed at the Centers. These Centers are capitalizing on existing partnerships with other medical centers. An infrastructure is in place from other health-related initiatives that will allow us to more quickly roll out services at partner medical institutions throughout the nation. Many University Hospitals that are not currently working with the core Centers have also expressed an interest in joining the WBV initiative. As resources are available, the core Centers will add other hospitals to the WBV network, initially giving preference to those located in areas of the country where services for Veteran's and their families are in greater demand.
In further developing the infrastructure for the WBV satellite centers beyond existing partnerships among the core University Hospitals, we plan to capitalize on existing medical and clinical research networks insofar as such networks can facilitate our goal of rapidly and systematically rolling out the clinical protocols developed and implemented by the initial core University Hospitals.
Location of Satellite Centers will be chosen based on specific criteria including:
1. Population concentrations of veterans deployed to OIF/OEF
2. Geographic regions of the United States where there are currently limited or no resources available for veterans and their families
